Worldish is developing a two-way translation app designed to solve problems such as the following: Imagine a person who has recently fled Syria and arrives at a Swedish emergency clinic with severe chest pain. The person has limited proficiency in Swedish and English, no one on staff speaks Arabic, and it is difficult to find an interpreter.

Instead, the doctor or nurse brings out a pair of tablets with a customized language app. They ask questions that are displayed and read aloud in Arabic to the patient, who in turn sends back answers understood by the staff. They can quickly pinpoint the problem, make a diagnosis, and begin treatment without unnecessary delay.

The scenario above is just one example of how a new tool for cross-language communication can make a difference in healthcare.

The app is being tested at several different clinics, and the investment will be used to bring the app into commercial operation.
